2008-01-28 : When Too Much Choice Is Bad

I know that linux is trying to be all things to all ... ummm ... men. And yes you do need some basic apps to get up and running, but I really wish that the Fedora guys would give you a minimal install with just the GUI and no apps so you could see what a minimal installed system would look like. They do give you a "server" flavour that seems right except that that often doesn't have the GUI.

Most Windows users would find it cool that as soon as the OS is installed they can check their email, surf the net and edit some documents. OTOH which of the several and I mean several email prorgams should I use?

AND someone has to explain to me why when I've installed my shiny new OS, it has services for such things as pcmcia (and it's a DESKTOP!). Let's hope someone comes up witha flavour that is sensible real soon.
