Application Software (a.k.a Program)

Application, computer program, software all refer to the tasks your computer runs for you. To be really geeky about it there are different types of aplications and several classes of software. Probably all you need to know is that they do stuff that you want (sometimes).

IT

IT or Information Technology is the electronic transfer, processing and storage of knowledge. IT is a broad encompassing term not limited to (a) the knowledge content itself, (b) the physcial hardware storage, and (c) the development of software applications that manage information content.

RTFM

Abbreviation for Read The Fine Manual. This term is meant to convey the obviousness of the reply to a question posed in a forum, online chat room or email. In other words, the answer is well documented and there is no need to repeat such sage advice right here.

EULA

Abbreviation for End User License Agreement. This is the nominal information about what limits are imposed on "fair" use of the software.

GUI

GUI or graphical user interface is the general term describing the way in which a computer user interacts with their computer. Simply put it is the computer program as it is presented on screen.

Web Application (a.k.a Web Service)

A web application is a computer program than runs on a remote computer and displays results in a web browser. The web application program runs on the server and the web browser provides the user with a means of controlling the data and viewing the server's information.

The single biggest advantage a web application has over run of the mill programs that run on a desktop (local) computer is the ability to update and maintain the software without having to redistribute and re-install the software whenever it is changed.

A web application can also be referred to as a web service.

Weblog (a.k.a. Blog)

A weblog is a web site or portion of a web site where pages represent a journal or diary. These pages can be on a topical theme or the general musings of someone or a group of someones. Weblogs cater for all tastes, and Google lets you Google Blog Search weblogs for things that interest you.
